Guest Contributor - Eyelash Extensions: All you need to know about lashes to look your best for your wedding
Being in the beauty business, we often get questions from brides regarding eyelash extensions and whether or not to try them for their big day. We thought this would be a great opportunity to dive in and cover all you need to know about lashes to help you make a better and more informed decision on what works best for you. We’ll cover all you need to know to look your best for your wedding.
We are Liv and Catherine, the ladies behind Beauty Spot in Owen Sound. Our studio offers a number of aesthetic services focusing on lashes, nails, and brows.
First things first, there are three main types of lash extensions; Classic, Volume, and Hybrid. Classics refer to the application of one false eyelash to one natural eyelash. This is a very soft, wake-up-and-go, “are those your real lashes?” type of look.
Volume lashes involve applying between two and five (sometimes more) finer extensions to one natural lash. This is a more obvious look that is full, fluffy, and glamorous. When we refer to Hybrid lashes, we are talking about a mix of Classic and Volume lashes which creates an in-between look. Once the type of lash is chosen, we’ll then build a look based on the client’s preferences, eye shape, and natural lash length and strength.
The other option for brides is a lash lift and tint. A lash lift is a great alternative to extensions for those seeking a more natural look or who may be prone to eye sensitivity and irritation. Rather than apply a synthetic lash, we perm the natural lash upward to create a long lasting curl and tint them black to really make them pop.
When it comes to extensions, it’s always a good idea to have your first full set of lashes applied at least two weeks before your wedding day. We then recommend scheduling a two-week fill for the week of your wedding. We suggest this for a couple of reasons. First, applying extensions early gives brides time to get used to them and ensure they don’t have any adverse reactions to the products used. Second, this process allows us to make minor adjustments to the bride’s lashes should she decide to go with a different lash type or look. Lash lifts on the other hand last between four and six weeks on average so booking your appointment a week or two ahead of your wedding day is recommended.
Maintaining the health of your lashes is the most important part of our job. For clients with fine lashes, slow growth or those who want longer, fuller extensions we recommend using a lash growth serum called EyEnvy. Applied once daily along the lash line as you would apply liquid liner, this conditioner works true wonders for lash and brow hair growth alike.
Lashes are only one part of the process to create the perfect bridal look. With that in mind, we have a few tips for your day-of routine.
Lash extensions can absolutely be paired with a full face of makeup. Something you and your makeup artist will want to be aware of is that cotton swab and cotton pad fibres tend to get tangled in eyelash extensions. Instead, opt for something like a flocked applicator or a terry cloth.
Eyelash extensions are made from a synthetic plastic fibre and are heat sensitive. Excessive heat from hair tools or even a hot oven can cause your lashes to lose their curl and fall flat. If this happens, your lash studio can re-curl them. It’s a very quick and easy process.
Keeping your lashes clean is necessary both for your lash health and maintaining the longevity of your extensions. Using an oil-free cleanser on your lashes daily will help avoid any build up of dirt or makeup and reduce the risk of irritation. We have a great gentle cleanser available at Beauty Spot for $12.
